Sneak Peek at NRF 2019 Retail’s Big Show

As of this writing, we are one week away from NRF 2019 Retail’s Big Show. For retail, this is the big event. Last year’s show drew in 37,000 participants. This year, we expect even more to attend. With over 700 exhibitors, from over 99 countries around the world, there is always something interesting and new to see and discuss. Are you looking for new ideas, innovations in retail, new technologies to boost your abilities or to fix a nagging challenge? Then this is the place to find it.

In December we gave you our quick ‘What to see at NRF 2019’ guide. This was the first sneak peek at what several partners, friendlies and vendors are doing at the show this year. There are just too many things to discuss about NRF 2019 and this year’s events. Here are a few more items to add to your ‘To Do’ list at the show. Hoping these help you plan out your retail journey…


What To Do And See at NRF 2019:

1. Microsoft – All About Partnerships

First of all, you just CANNOT miss the Microsoft booth. Really! It’s at the main entrance on the third level – as the first booth. In fact, you walk right into it when you come in. But, the best aspect is that Microsoft deeply promotes its partnerships in the retail ecosystem. That will be just as true at NRF 2019.

Microsoft’s 4,200 square foot booth (390 square metres) will include over 20 partners. It spans 2 levels, with private meeting rooms on the second floor. Certainly, it will look and feel like walking through a small community of retail stores.

Of the 20 partners on the booth, look for:

  • Episerver (Personalization & Digital Experience Cloud)
  • FellowRobots (Shelf Scanning robotics – very cool)
  • The Kroger Co. (showcasing Retail as a Service – RAAS)
  • Microsoft Store (their very own retail operations)


Microsoft - Shelley Bransten

On the speaking circuit, Microsoft’s very own Shelley Bransten, CVP Global Retail and Consumer Goods will be speaking. Shelley will present “Delivering on the promise of Intelligent Retail.” Her discussion is on Sunday, Jan 13th at 10:15 am, Stage 5 Expo Hall, Level 3. Sharing her insights and best practices on intelligent retail – it’s a session not to be missed. She will also be speaking about ‘Mentorship all around’, at the Girls’ Lounge, on level 3.

Expect some amazing and insightfulness from Microsoft this year. In a short discussion with Dave Rodgerson, Retail Leader for Microsoft Canada, he sums it well. Dave surmises that “as a retailer, you have a chance to see a bit of the future today when you come to a show like NRF 2019. Microsoft is doing it’s bit to help build that retail future, with all its partners.” Make sure to look for Dave at the show.


2. NYC Retail Tours at NRF 2019

If you are not from New York, then getting a tour of the latest and greatest in retail – is a ‘Must Do’.

Microsoft is sponsoring the 2019 NYC Store Tour, hosted by Retail Council of Canada (RCC). The tour runs on Jan 13th starting at 1:30 pm. It is open to retailers, but space is extremely limited. This bus tour covers Amazon 4 Star, AllBirds, B8ta, Market @, Macy’s Scan & Go, Medmen and Nike. The tour ends at Microsoft’s very own flagship store at 677 5thAvenue, for a networking reception.

3. BigCommerce Brings The Cider

Our friends at BigCommerce will be just down the hall from us in booth #1509. After dropping by the booth, join the team for a happy hour at Blackbarn on Monday at 7:30 pm. In fact, the happy hour is sponsored by both BigCommerce and Avalara (another great partner). Network with industry peers, and enjoy a complimentary spirit.

If you can’t make it to the happy hour, remember to drop by their booth to sample craft beer brews from Goose Island and Blue Point Brewery. Or if a beer is not for you, on Tuesday BigCommerce, Avalara and Born Group offer you Hot Apple Cider (spiked if you ask nicely).

Maryann Bekkedahl, SVP of Business Development will be there as well. So do make a point of saying ‘Hello’ and checking out BigCommerce exciting new offering!


4. Retail’s Wearable POS

PCMS at booth #2001 on level 3 – will be showing the latest in-store manager wearables. These intelligent wearables help optimize a key resource’s time. 5. Hot New Omni-Channel Research

If you are looking for new stats, and great new research – then NRF 2019 will not disappoint you. As a sneak peek – Bell and Howell, IHL and OrderDynamics came together to work on some groundbreaking in-store research about BOPIS in North America. This on the heels of the Omni-2000 research which provides a state of the omni-channel look at over 2,000 retailers around the world. Watch for the announcement of this new research at the show! Come by booth #240 (OrderDynamics) and #1409 (Bell and Howell) to be on the list to get a copy of the latest in BOPIS (as soon as it’s released).

Although the US version of the Omni-2000 is already available, the Canadian and France research will be made public at or shortly after NRF 2019. Others to follow include Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Austria. All with exciting new developments in omni-channel retailing and revelations about what is an is not going well. All this from a ground floor – shopper’s perspective.

In the same way, our friends at Infovista, together with Incisiv, officially launch their new research on the “5 Requirements for Successful In-Store Digital Experience.” This in conjunction with their ‘Un-conference’ NYC store tour… makes for an exceptional retail learning journey.


6. Un-Conference & Fireside Chat

Un-conference & Fireside ChatLike the Microsoft hosted store tour, the Infovista sponsored Un-conference @ NRF, led by Incisiv, takes visitors on a curated behind-the-scenes tour. You will see Nespresso’s Soho Boutique, experience the efficiency of Stance, and get up close and personal with Indochino. It is interesting to note that Indochino is one of the particularly successful online-only retailers – that converted to an omni-channel retailer – with brick-and-mortar stores. This too takes place on Sunday 13th with the tour starting at 3:30 pm, leaving the Javits Center. If you want to be part of it… send us a note to let us know. Again, no promises, but we will try to work with Infovista to fit you in.

But before that, don’t miss Infovista & Incisiv’s Fireside Chat with several key players in retail. The ‘Speakeasy’ dinner will be hosted at Zuma on Saturday, January 12th starting at 6:00 pm. You will hear from:

  • Katherine Monsaebian, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Barney’s.

7. Fine Dining & Networking

As you get warmed up to the show, join Episerver and OrderDynamics on Sunday night for some fine dining at the Hunt & Fish Club. 8. South American – A Warm Welcome!

Part of the beauty of NRF 2019 is the opportunity to meet with so many retailers from around the world. This year, Reintech will be joining us at the show, representing Chile and South America. Ronald Berstein, CEO at Reintech points out: “This year is particularly important as retailers in Chile and South America are being challenged by cross-border commerce as well as the constant threat of Amazon landing in this geographic area. But, we see this as an opportunity instead of a threat, as local retailers have physical stores, which when properly incorporated in an omni-channel approach, gives them an unquestionable advantage.”

9. Avalara

South America leads us to think of warm places. Much warmer than New York in January. Holding that warm beach-weather thought, wouldn’t it be nice to win a Margarita making machine? If you are game, drop by Avalara’s booth #4149 on the 3rd Level to enter.

Of course, Avalara’s main business is to help retailers makes taxes on order – easy. This is particularly important as a growing number of retailers are launching omni-channel initiatives. Do you know about Wayfair and how that is going to affect your business? How about how to deal with the tax implications of drop shipping. Read up about what you need to think about relating to omni-channel retailing and taxes (quick read here). Then drop by the booth, to discuss it. And don’t forget about the Margarita machine!


10. Salesforce Keeps Making a Splash

A few years ago when you thought Salesforce, you thought CRM. That’s still true, but now Salesforce is a main player in E-commerce, marketing and so much more. Of course, you have to see the booth #3719 on the Third Level. You can learn how to personalize shopper marketing and unify their commerce engagement.

Additionally, you will learn about some of the featured clients like Crocs, Mulberry, The Container Store, and Brunello Cucinelli, as well as enjoying Godiva chocolates and s’mores as you browse.


Keynotes with Salesforce

Salesforce - Stephanie Buscemi

Stephanie Buscemi, EVP & Chief Marketing Officer at Salesforce will be a panellist discussing the purpose-driven organization. This session will be hosted by Fast Company’s Jeff Beer, staff editor.  They will be joined by Bill Bettencourt, CMO, GM Americas at TOMS Shoes, and Jostein Solheim, of Ben & Jerry. This discussion will be bringing conscious capitalism to the forefront. No doubt, there will be plenty to ponder.

Part of the Big Ideas Sessions hosted by Rob Garf, VP of Retail & Consumer Goods, will be a discussion with Shinola. Heike Young, Senior Manager, Industry Strategy & Insights at Salesforce, highlights that “this discussion shines a light on going beyond everyday ‘retail as usual’. In this session, we are going to hear directly from Shinola about how they are using Salesforce and partners to unify their commerce engagement with customers.”


The BIG Party

You can’t go to NRF this year without attending at least one of the amazingly big parties. Salesforce now has the reputation for throwing the biggest and best of them. In character, there will be a surprise band playing… and rumours are that you won’t want to miss this one! Open bar, great food, and of course all the networking and winding down from the big day at the show.
